Well, I think we know that Dave really wanted it to go out as close to live
to tape as possible, but my impression from the beginning has been that
Colbert is much more open to inserting taped bits that superficially read
as live to tape. Of course Dave himself would sometimes do a bit of that,
but the break from live to pre-taped was obvious, and part of the joke.
