I've never even heard of Michelle Wolf until tonight. A little digging
tells me she was on The Daily Show and she has a new streaming weekly talk
show coming out soon. As with every WHCD I've ever watched, some of the
jokes landed but most didn't. It is a room of people who are heavy on ego
and thin on skin, so even a good joke isn't going to play well. A brilliant
comic is going to struggle to connect with that crowd; Wolf didn't even
seem willing to try to connect with the crowd, opting to fire the jokes
into the ether. I'm sure the right is going to despise the set, and I doubt
the left will go out of its way to defend her.

I have to ask one question. As stated before, I had to pull away from the
topical TV comedy shows back in 2016 (I just don't find the mockery of
Trump or his cult of Nazis to be funny subjects of humor; they are
grotesque versions of the worst aspects of mankind, and I just can't laugh
when I think of them). I've watched less than a dozen Daily Shows hosted by
Noah, no Sam Bee, none of the Jimmys. I do listen to British
political/topical podcasts like The Bugle and BBC's Now Show/News Quiz, but
their standard response to any news from Trump's America now is basically
some variation of "What the fuck?!" The last of the WHCD performers I saw
that unwilling to acknowledge the crowd was Bill Maher (back when he still
told jokes), but he's always had a smug style to him so it sort of fit in
with who he is as a performer. Wolf didn't seem smug to me, but I don't
know her style at all. So my question: Is Wolf indicative of the state of
the genre these days? I ask because I am so detached from the genre that I
honestly can't rate her performance with any degree of self-confidence.
