I suspect we could, but it is well outside the scope of this series. I think someone is working on combining seq and req_seq and it could perhaps be done as part of that. But any such redesign needs serious through and effort. If we don't see movement in the next few months then I could take a look. This patches cleans up what is there to make it work.
