I've used the documentation at openoffice.org (search there for excel file format) to help write code to read/write Excel directly from Arev applications (old version without all the fancy new stuff in OpenInsight), and this would be equally possible from UV. But it's a brute-force approach and I'd only recommend it after all other options are exhausted.
