For quite sometime I've gotten good results with letting the UV spooler hand off to a unix script. I convert the text to postscript using postprint, then use ps2pdf to distill the PDF. Total software cost = $0... Great for reports, etc.
The real question is, do you want to take what you are producing NOW and convert them to PDF format, or do you want to start producing nice, glitzy things that become PDFs?
