Doesn't the umask have to be the inverse (for want of a better word)? umask 002 would give the same permisions as chmod 664? Or is that something that has been changed?

Anyone know how to set an overall parameter so that files created in Universe over Linux get r/w/x permissions? We are having to chmod 777 after we create any file… want that to be the default.
