As I understand it (and I'm probably wrong), the UV command editor will convert from one form to the other (but not the other way round). So if you use (I think it's this way round) EDIT_LIST and it can't find it, it will try EDIT.LIST.
I was only ever used to the dot versions on PI, so they're the only ones I use.
