Research Fellowship --- available immediately.

A position is available for programming and research using and
extending Bayesian network technology. An existing program which uses
a Bayesian network to model user cognition will be enhanced to
incorporate aspects of causal reasoning. This work will involve
designing new inference mechanisms to emulate aspects of causal
reasoning investigated by cognitive psychologists, and then
implementing and testing the results. The research fellow will also
be involved in programming to extend the use of existing Bayesian
network tools for decision support.

The position is funded in part by an ARC large grant and in part by a
Monash University SMURF grant. The research fellow will work closely
with her/his joint supervisors, Dr Kevin Korb and Dr Ann Nicholson.
The position is funded initially for a period of one year, however
additional funding may be made available to extend the position.

Applicants must hold a relevant degree, preferrably at honours level
or above. A strong background in programming is required, as is
familiarity with C. Knowledge of any of the following would be an
advantage, but is not essential: GUI programming, artificial
intelligence, reasoning under uncertainty, Bayesian networks,
statistics, cognitive psychology. Research fellows are expected to
contribute to all parts of the project including the preparation of
research papers for publication, preparation of grant applications,
and the presentation of research.

The salary for an applicant without PhD will be Research Fellow Level
A steps 4 to 6 within the range $38,505 - $42,084 AUD per annum
according to qualifications and relevant experience. The salary for an
applicant with a PhD will be Research Fellow Level A steps 3 to 1
within the range $43,689 - $46,898 AUD per annum according to
qualifications and relevant experience.

Candidates should send by 31 August 2000 a curriculum vitae, a list of
publications, names of three referees, and a statement of research
interests to:
