Yeah, the 4948 is a reliable workhorse for a layer 2 / layer 3 switch. We
do routing and vlans on our 4948, and I still enjoy the familiarity of IOS
- especially for VLANs. Slowly learning when and where I can employ
Mikrotik but I find the learning curve for VLANs is tough to get used to.
You have to really draw upon your inner Latvian to figure it out. Netonix
are nice too - we use them in other scenarios where we just want POE at a
micropop and we have a separate tower router anyway.
