Believe it or not, you already knew the answer. There's a command called 'split' that does what you need. Here's a quick tutorial: http://www.newlinuxuser.com/split-a-large-file-into-several-smaller-files/ There's no need for archival/compression programmes :) The main question you should be asking, however, is why you need to split the file in the first place.
