Hi Terry. I recently purchased a Telstra Turbo modem for work (Sierra Wireless USB 301) and it just works with Ubuntu 10.04 (also on 9.10, haven't tested it on any other versions). What is written on the bottom side of the modem and what Ubuntu version are you using?
