That sounds weird that it won't print OO docs Boden, my HP's have always
printed any type of document. Do you have hp-lip installed?
Rather than wait for the mods, here is what I posted earlier:
I only use HP printers because I find they have the best support for
Linux and a system tray app that works well. I have been using Ubuntu
for about 7 years and HP printers (wireless and cabled) for about 5 of
those without any hassles (I threw out the Epson and Canon printers
because they just didn't play as well).
The main thing I need to do with each new printer is make sure the
connection is setup correctly otherwise it can have problems scanning,
throwing a lot of "Device not found" IO errors. To get them both
working (printer and scanner) I create separate printer connections for
both. Here is a link to the screenshots showing the different connections:

Both connections use the same driver but I find doing it this way gets
both working flawlessly every time. There are other ways to do it I'm
sure but this works for me. Hope this helps.

I haven't used any wireless printers, but i recommend checking
out the OpenPrinting database:

In general, HP seem to be pretty good with providing info to
Linux developers, but there are some exceptions.
