do you have an lcd or crt display? as far as I can remember most lcd monitors have 60hz refresh rates ... but since thats causing flicking for you, it could be the driver that has a bug. can you do a:
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version string" from a GUI command line? In the worst case, you might have to install the latest driver from nvidia.com.
