Caro amigo, Isso aconteceu comigo em meu notebook, sendo que pelo que percebi foi devido à um erro doido na minha partição windows é que acabou afetando meu grub (não sei pq mas o sistema inicializava por esta partição, coisa doida não??). SOLUÇÃO: Coloquei o cd do ubuntu-server e nele a opção de reinstalar o grub... foi batata.
