claude fixed it for me ...
Environment: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.1, Ubuntu Server 24.04 → 26.04 via
do-release-upgrade. The ubuntu-server-raspi metapackage is not installed, so
piboot-try was not pulled in. The boot
partition is 256 MB, which is too small for the piboot A/B layout anyway.
Symptom: During the upgrade, flash-kernel 3.110ubuntu2.3 fails for
linux-image-7.0.0-1020-raspi:
Unsupported platform 'Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.1'.
run-parts: /etc/initramfs/post-update.d//flash-kernel exited with return code
1
dpkg: error processing package initramfs-tools (--configure)
Cause: /usr/share/flash-kernel/db/all.db in 3.110 no longer contains the
Ubuntu "raspi" entries for the Pi 4 Model B. In 24.04 they existed (Method: pi,
Kernel-Flavors: raspi raspi-realtime).
The Pi 5 is affected in the same way.
Workaround (as root, after answering C to the apport prompt and letting
do-release-upgrade finish, do NOT reboot):
printf '\nMachine: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.1\nKernel-Flavors:
raspi\nDTB-Id: broadcom/bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb\nBoot-Kernel-Path:
/boot/firmware/vmlinuz\nBoot-Initrd-Path:
/boot/firmware/initrd.img\nBoot-DTB-Path:
/boot/firmware/bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb\n' >> /etc/flash-kernel/db
dpkg --configure -a
apt -f install && apt full-upgrade
Optional, if the 256 MB boot partition is nearly full because of old firmware
backups:
cd /boot/firmware && ls *.bak | grep -vE '^(vmlinuz|initrd.img)\.bak$' |
xargs rm -v
Verify before rebooting:
cmp /boot/firmware/initrd.img /boot/initrd.img-7.0.0-1020-raspi && cmp
/boot/firmware/bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb
/lib/firmware/7.0.0-1020-raspi/device-tree/broadcom/bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb && echo
OK
Notes:
- Do not add Boot-Script-Path. Without a matching U-Boot-Script-Name in
all.db, flash-kernel aborts with cannot open /tmp/flash-kernel.XXXX/bootscript:
No such file. On this setup boot.scr is
not used anyway, because config.txt has kernel=vmlinuz and initramfs
initrd.img followkernel.
- DTB-Id is required. Without it, flash-kernel fails with Couldn't find DTB
on the following paths: ….
- Alternative with a boot partition of 512 MB or more: apt install piboot-try
instead of the db entry. It replaces flash-kernel and migrates to the A/B
layout. This is what fixed the same error
on a Pi 5 (Unsupported platform 'Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev 1.0').
- Root cause in the upgrader: On a system with ubuntu-server-raspi installed,
the upgrade pulls in piboot-try automatically and has no issue. Systems without
that metapackage end up with the
generic flash-kernel and break.
