So going back over this, and after trying out the disk on multiple dorm- mates comps, I have come to the conclusion that there are 2 separate bugs here:
People who get a flashing black cursor in the top left (possibly not waiting long enough for system to load?) and people who have ALL displays (1-8, including x-windows) go dead, though they may be running (sounds seems to work). The ones with the dead screens almost ALL seem to be combination of AMD processor and ATI graphics.
