I understand LyX recommends latex-xft-fonts, though those of us who installed it through Add/Remove will never see this, and latex-xft-fonts will not be installed (tested on 1.5.5-1 in Intrepid). Because this causes misleading behavior on the default install (\cdot is significantly different than \times in math), and latex-xft-fonts is a 92.5 kB download and takes up 252 kB installed, I'd recommend reviewing it to be a dependency.
