I have this problem as well. I have gnome-settings-daemon 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 installed.
I know it sounds like low priority, but this is pretty annoying piece of the user interface and I have to believe a reasonably easy fix. Maybe someone can share a workaround that makes it less severe. @zoidberg: can you give details on your workaround through gconf- editor?
