Hi Laura,
Just to clarify, you use "System->Preferences->Appearance" to turn
compiz on and off?
When you go to turn compiz back on do you select "Extra" or "Custom"?
Do you have a "Custom" option? If not then try installing simple-ccsm.
Does it work better if you select "Custom" to re-enable?
