Sorry but it appears I spoke too soon.  I've replaced the faulty memory
with modules which pass memtest but I still get the problem.  It's a
complete system lock up, the SysRq process yields no results.

The output of uname -a is:

Linux steve-desktop 2.6.27-5-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 00:36:38 UTC 2008
x86_64 GNU/Linux
