ok nick, please attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
also, try renaming to something else (so xorg doesn't find one, but you can 
always revert to it if necessary) and restart your machine
finally, if none of the above works, try running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh 
xserver-xorg" to recreate the file
