problem was related to the format of USB keys, in the usb-creator dialog
they showed as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, in the backend.py there is a
regular expression that was throwing out /dev/sdc and then it was
expecting a number that was not there and so it throw an exception.

Once understood this (they were formatted from windows before and
processed by ub8convert -
http://cs.marlboro.edu/~jmajewski/eee804/Ub8convert.exe - tool) I format
the usb key with gParted and then when running usb-creator I finally was
able to see /dev/sdc1. Clicking on it and choosing "make startup"
finally worked.

In such cases a warning dialog would have been a better choice.
