thanks for the attachments.

Please also attach your /var/log/dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and
eventually your .Xsession-errors (in your home dir).

Some questions: 
* When at the black screen, does ctrl+alt+backspace restart X?
* When at the black screen, can you ssh into the system from another computer? 
* Have you tried an older version of Ubuntu? Did it work with suspend and 
resume?

A backtrace would be very helpful for us to be able to track down the problem.

I am not sure if this will work though - perhaps suspend kills the ssh 
connection, but please try it anyway.
