So no IO-APIC error? I still get that error on the liveCD for 8.10 and
gentoo but am going to try a reinstall today anyway and see how it goes.
With noapic option, the message goes away and things are better but I
currenlty still have a ton of trouble with USB flaking out and the system
doing _NOTHING_ without some user input (which with realplayer streams has
the effect that it goes silent at random then when you jog the mouse a whole
load of audio packets that somehow have been buffered somewhere come out at
once - similarly with vlc on some files). Strangely running azureus prevents
these pauses as if the network IO or azureus' disk IO is providing the
stimulus that jogging the mouse supplies.

It's just really wierd, happens at random and is really really frustrating.
I have trouble getting anything done on this machine and am moving most work
onto my ASUS notebook which works 100% fine with all ubuntu (except for the
Ricoh card reader and the slow hdparm - but that's another story...)
