I finally did get the microphone to work in my Asus A8F by installing the current development snapshot of alsa (post 1.0.18a thing - the current stable 1.0.18a version did not do the trick).
To install the current (2008-01-08) snapshot I used a script posted in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=962695 I lost all sound once after the upgrade of alsa, but generally it seems to work ok.
