** Description changed:

- Firstly, I'm new to linux -- sorry for any lack of understanding I
- demonstrate! Please try to keep it simple.
+ Updated, and deleted all the unnecessary detail.

- So, here's the issue: I can't play MP3s. I can hear other sounds,
- tested the sound card in the Hardware testing and hear OK, can hear
- sounds in games on Youtube, and even on box.net (playing an online MP3
- in my storage there but through their interface). But when I try to
- play an MP3 in a player on my PC, it fails. I've tried the players
- Ubuntu came with, plus also VLC, Amarok, Real Player and one or two
- others. Each time I installed a new player, I made sure I also
- installed the applicable codecs needed. But no luck. Depending on the
- player I use, sometimes I get generic error messages, sometimes it looks
- like the song is playing, but it lasts a few seconds (not minutes) and I
- get only a few non-musical squeeks and pops if anything.
+ Basically I was accessing the documents in my Windows "My Documents"
+ folder, forgetting the encryption program that runs in the background
+ when I'm using Windows. That program decrypts files in My Documents on
+ the fly, meaning that all I had to do was login to Windows and either
+ decrypt the folder or move its content to the external HD (and let the
+ program decrypt the content as it goes).

- I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my WD USB External HDD. I installed
- it from a USB Pendrive, and ran all the updates available. I'm using a
- Thinkpad T43.
-
- I've checked all the volume levels - both hardware and software. I can
- get sounds, just can't play MP3s.
-
- I've reviewed many, many bugs via google, and haven't found anything
- that helped. Please advise. A couple of outputs from the Sound
- Troubleshooter
-
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting?action=show&redirect=DebuggingSoundProblems#Loading%20a%20working%20sound%20configuration)
- are pasted below. That trouble shooter advised posting a new bug if no
- joy...

- So - any ideas?
-
- Thanks in advance!

+ The program was installed for me by our friendly corporate network
+ admins - I'd forgotten all about it!
