To rule out KDE/Qt you can log in to a Failsafe X Terminal session (or
whatever it is called in the login options) and run non-KDE
applications. You won't get menus etc, so you have to start things from
the command line, e.g. "firefox".

For EXA (default if you remove XAA from xorg.conf) there are some
options you can try, see "man exa".
