This problem sounds disturbingly familiar to the problem with Dell BIOSes where 
you cannot tell the BIOS you've allocated more video memory.

The patch mentioned there was later introduced into the XFree86 source
tree, (and I assume into XOrg).

Since this obviously wasn't a problem in the last version of Ubuntu and
since users aren't reporting problems getting 1024x768 resolution
(another side effect of the BIOS bug), does anyone have a reasonable
explanation as to what may have changed between releases to cause this
problem?
