I've got simular problem, but not wil live CD. I have ubuntu 9.10 beta that I can't boot. After usual update and reboot everything is normal until X is going to be started. Instead of gdm-login screen I have console with flashing text about boot process with normal messages and login prompt. It's impossible to login because system responds very strangely on keyboard, I think 9 of 10 keypresses are missed, I can't even type my login correctly.
