This error has this time coincided with having changed a setting in nvidia-settings with the result that Ubuntu is now workable together with NVIDIA FOR THE FIRST TIME.
I will restart now and see if the system retains my change - something it has refused to do before. Shall return with a report if things have - hopefully - been fixed this way.
