Thanks for the instructions. On the first go (sudo rmmod ricoh_mmc) it went into suspend and resumed fine. However the system became unstable and I could not launch any applications. I had to forcibly power off the laptop.
Trying the same thing again on the next boot, it unfortunately returned to the previous behavior (suspends fine but on resume the screen is blank apart from the mouse cursor).
