I saw a similar problem, to the OP, on an IBM T30 following upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic - I'd been having problems booting under Jaunty since 2.6.28-15, I had been and still am, using 2.6.28-14 as a working kernel. That [booting problems] being said, removing the 'quiet' clause from the 2.6.31-14 entry in menu.lst, I observed that the boot hangs, not responding to the keyboard, whilst attempting to run fsck - a situation only remedied by pressing and holding, the power button.
