The suggested solution does not work for me since I have GRUB installed (v.1.96) and it's loading fine. I am able to successfully boot the OS I have installed on my computer (Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows Vista). I tried to reinstall it (even after a complete uninstall with apt-get) but I still get this error whenever I install a program (the error shows up at the end of the installation script). However, the programs I'm installing work just fine. The problem is not critical, however, it is annoying. I am also planning to clean update my system to Kubuntu 9.10 somewhere in the near future.
