I think this is an important observation:  As long as the connection is
in use, it is not dropped.  For example, if a ping command sends packets
every second, the connection does not die.  This is also a (somewhat
dirty) workaround for the problem.

Maybe the wireless chipset / driver turns off the radio to save energy
when not in use?
