Larry's suggestion doesn't work for me. Or rather, it might, but I can't find the "volume icon in the top panel" he refers to. (Perhaps it's a non-default applet that I don't have installed?)
I only have the standard panel volume control, which has a volume slider on left click, and a menu with "mute" and "sound preferences" on right click. "Sound preferences" brings up the standard sound preferences control panel, which is unhelpful.
