hi Steve, Gave Plymouth another try just now. Installed current version from the repository, checked the script you mentioned in #3 (it's the correct one) and rebooted. I saw the blue/white bars, broken up by some messages. After that I got the garbled left hand side of the screen again, the right hand side being all black. Rebooted into rescue mode, did 'apt-get remove plymouth' and rebooted into a usable system again. Sorry, it's still not working as it should.
