As I stated before, the login screen doesn't come up. I still added a new user and used that one to sudo to a root shell and restart gdm (I don't see how that would help, but who knows :-) ). It however didn't change. Basically, the login screen is replaced by some black screen with some X mouse pointer - so no way to login as who ever. Any idea which log file I could check to find a hint?
