This is telling us the problem is not in the kernel/hardware but in the (most 
probably) X server.
We have now to understand why the button events are not trapped.

A last question, when this last loss of mouse button events happened, where you 
doing/ had you just been doing something particular? Was there a background 
process that kicked in? Were the open applications the same every time this 
happened? 
You can find a lot of information in your log files (in Gnome you can use the 
System->Administration->System Log tool to help you with this). Note the time 
of occurrence and what you were doing and then check the log files to see if 
anything interesting is reported just before and after the event.
We must find a way to correlate this to something: if this is random it is 
going to be VERY difficult to hunt it down.
