I wonder if this is even really happening with respect to setting
xsettings, the gnome font applet has in the recent past (the past year
anyway) had a race condition where it would not get set right and
wouldn't actually change properly until a user logged out and back in. I
am not sure if this was ever fixed in gnome.

I can look into this further but in the past similar issues were due
directly to bugs in gnome-control-center, reassigning back to g-c-c
until it is determined the font issue actually is not due to the races
that have been seen before.
