I apologize for the tantrums. Thanks to a completely unrelated problem (could not shut down, restart or logout via the indicator applet), I discovered that I still had grub - and not grub2 - installed on my computer. Installing grub 2 has apparently fixed both of my problems. I will repost if either problem returns, as it has in the past, repeatedly.
