In fact, I have hardware somewhat similar to yours (Realtek ALC888,
motherboard GA-MA770T-UD3P), so I decided to give it a try here. I can
successfully record two channels simultaneously: I first set up
alsamixer to have one capture be the mic and the other line-in, and
levels at 0 dB. I then opened two terminal windows and ran the following
two commands in parallell:

arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D plughw:0,0 foobar0.wav
arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D plughw:0,2 foobar2.wav

...and both line and mic were recorded appropriately. Can you confirm
that the same applies to you?

The pulseaudio layer, however, does not support that out of the box. (I guess 
this could be a design decision, to try to make things as simple as 
possible...) 
Perhaps it is possible by tweaking the PA configuration files...let me meditate 
on that :-)
