Ach! It's the FGLRX graphics driver, or maybe an Xserver bug enabled
when fglrx is used. Switching to the free driver made the problem go
away.

Using fglrx the hollow-thick-line problem is constant at 1920x1280
screen res, but at 1280x1024, the top thick line in the demo is black
about half way across, then hollow, and expose events (to re-paint
regions when un-covered) always seem to re-paint as hollow.

The detailed manner in which the X server sends expose events to an
application may be affected by the driver and the details of hardware
acceleration and caching of save-unders, etc., so this may still be an
Open Office bug (but I'm not an expert in X, so this is speculation).
But it may well be just a bug in the graphics driver.

OTOH, I don't see such symptoms with any other application.

P.S. Thanks for the pointer to 'testdrive' . I use VirtualBox, though.
