Every cloud has a silver lining - have been trying to get my better half
to ditch XP on her laptop for over a year. A week ago XP had a bit of
melt down and needed a reinstall - an opportunity not to be missed; I
admit to telling a little white lie, something along the lines of the
graphic card having failed and that Ubuntu could cope with the failure
mode, but poor old XP could not ;-) - 10.04 was duly installed and the
frankly ugly boot-up is explained away 'cos that's the time that the
amazing Ubuntu system 'detects the graphic card fault and compensates
for it'. Was this really wrong of me?

By the way, now she has it, she loves it - much faster and more
responsive apparently.....
