daniel: yes, if I send it to the trash, then do "empty trash", I get a confirmation dialog.
I think that was the bit I was missing. I also have "Include a delete command that bypasses trash" turned on, and was assuming that pressing the delete key would actually delete the file, not just send it to the trash. turns out I need to shift-delete to actually delete the file, and in that case, I get a confirmation dialog.
