Confirmed on Ubuntu 10.10 with OpenOffice 3.2.1. Can select text and apply "Condensed", with no visible change. Re- entering the "Character" menu, the selection is back to "Book".
Can select text and apply "Condensed Oblique", but it looks identical to "Oblique".
