I installed the 2.6.36 Kernel, as mikeos instructed, and it is working much better :) although I have observed two instances where the screen did not power up on resume ?? 2 of about 15 tries in my testing.
This may have no basis in reality, but since the 2.6.36 kernel update, the screen power always seems to resume if I have a USB mouse plugged in. When I am just using the track pad, the screen has failed to power up twice upon resume.
