Yes, the api function is app_indicator_set_icon(...), but the problem is
on the side of the program showing the indicators.

It works ok with indicator-application/gnome-panel, but causes a leak in
unity/compiz.

** Description changed:

  While indicator-multiload itself remains static, while it is running memory 
use in compiz increases about 1MB/min (RSS
  Attached is pidstat log showing at idle for about 4 min, the indicator 
started and ruuning for about the same, then stopped and back at idle for a  
couple of min.
