Similar problem on Thinkpad W520. Didn't seem to happen w/ 32 bit Ubuntu 11.04 for me, but does w/ 64 bit. I am also using the nVidia binary driver (I'm currently using 270.41.19, the .deb from the ubuntu-x-swat ppa). Haven't tried kernel 2.6.39-0 yet.
