I am running 2.6.20-15-generic (Feisty Fawn) on a Thinkpad T30 and I am having the same problem. I hibernate the machine (suspend to disk). When I power back up the sound does not work. If I restart the machine it does not solve the problem. I actually have to shutdown and pull the battery and AC power for it to work. I have not tried just shutting down and then restarting.
