Hmm this bug starting to become unfocused. Generally speaking you need to 
reboot or manually unload the nvidia modules if you are trying to switch 
between versions - that's just the nature of the drivers (it is unwise to be 
switching kernel modules like that on the fly anyway - you never know what the 
state the hardware will be left in). The nvidia-glx-legacy drivers aren't the 
best fit for your card (but the issue you were seeing with them was Bug #63461 
) .

Finally, the nvidia-glx-legacy drivers are 71xx and the "regular"
nvidia-glx drivers are 96xx. The 97xx drivers are nvidia-glx-new and
aren't compatible with Geforce 4s.

Does adding
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
to the Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf make any difference when you are 
using nvidia-glx?
